The Three-Legged Life
"Dear friend, I pray that you are prospering in every way and are in good health, just as your whole life is going well." - 3 John 1:2
When someone asks you, “Are you healthy?” What’s the first thing that comes to your mind? For most people, it’s physical. They start thinking about their body, their weight, maybe their cholesterol or blood pressure. For others, maybe a smaller group, the first thought might be mental health. Am I okay emotionally? Am I overwhelmed? Anxious? Depressed?
But almost no one hears that question and immediately thinks about their spiritual health. And yet, when you look at God’s Word, it becomes clear that true health, the kind of health God desires for you, isn’t just one-dimensional. It’s holistic.
Think of your life like a three-legged stool. One leg represents your body. Another your mind. And the third your soul. Now imagine trying to sit on that stool if one of those legs is missing or even just weak. It’s not going to go well. That’s how many people try to live, spending all their energy on fitness or diet or rest, but completely neglecting their walk with God. Or maybe their Bible is always open, but their mind is full of worry, and their body is worn down and undisciplined. That’s not the life God designed for you.
In 3 John 1:2, John prays for his friend’s whole life to be healthy. He says, “I pray that you are prospering in every way and are in good health, just as your whole life is going well.” That’s a picture of balance. God wants you to be healthy physically, mentally, and spiritually. He designed you with all three for a reason.
So here’s the question: How’s your stool? Are you giving attention to all three legs? Or is one getting ignored while the others carry the load? If you want to live steady, balanced, and whole, you’ve got to ask the Lord to help you care for every part of who He made you to be.
