Release Your Rights
"And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well." - Matthew 5:40
This verse would have shocked the original audience. In Jesus’ day, a person’s outer cloak was untouchable. It was their right, protected by Mosaic Law. If someone sued you and took everything, they could not take your coat. It was essential for survival and was often used as a blanket at night. Giving it up voluntarily was unheard of.
But Jesus flips that expectation on its head. He is not just addressing the legal system. He is confronting the heart. When someone wrongs you, the natural instinct is to protect what is yours, to dig your heels in and demand your rights. Yet Jesus says to give more than they ask. Let go of what you are entitled to. Live with open hands.
Why would He say that? Because following Jesus is not about defending your entitlements. It is about displaying His character. And His character is one of humility, surrender, and sacrificial love. When you voluntarily release what the world says is yours, you become a living picture of the Gospel. You stop fighting for what you think you deserve and start giving what others do not.
This was not about coats. It was about control. Jesus was showing us that the way to live free is not by clinging to what we have, but by trusting the One who gave it to us. Jesus sets the standard for life in His Kingdom. And in His Kingdom, we don’t fight to win. We surrender to shine. We don’t hold grudges. We hold grace. We don’t cling to what we’re owed. We trust the One who owns it all.
You do not need to fear letting go of your rights when your life is secured by the righteousness of Christ. He gave up everything so that we could gain everything. The question is, are you willing to live that same way?
