The Power Of Persistent Prayer
"And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart... And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily.” - Luke 18:1, 7-8a
We have all experienced the discouragement of an unanswered prayer. We pray for a loved one’s healing, for a breakthrough in a difficult situation, or for wisdom in a decision, but the silence from heaven can feel deafening. In these moments, it is tempting to "lose heart" and give up. Jesus, understanding this human tendency, told a specific parable to teach us the vital importance of persistence in prayer.
In the parable of the persistent widow, a powerless woman continually brings her request to an unjust judge who neither fears God nor cares about people. Her only tool is her persistence. She simply refuses to give up. Eventually, her constant pleading wears the judge down, and he grants her justice just to be rid of her. Jesus then draws a powerful contrast: if even an unjust judge will respond to persistence, how much more will our loving, just, and compassionate Father respond to the cries of His chosen children?
Persistence in prayer is not about nagging God into submission, as if He were reluctant to bless us. Instead, it is a profound expression of our faith. It demonstrates our belief that He is the only one who can answer. It proves we trust His character even when we cannot see His hand at work. Crying out to Him "day and night" is not a sign of doubt, but a declaration of dependence. Each time we repeat our request, we are reaffirming our belief that He is good, He is able, and He hears us.
