No Longer Slaves

"So you are no longer a slave, but God's child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir." - Galatians 4:7

What if someone told you that you'd been living as a servant in a house where you were actually the heir? That's exactly what Paul is telling us in this verse. Many of us live like spiritual slaves when we're actually spiritual royalty.

Paul uses the metaphor of slavery and adoption to illustrate our transformation in Christ. Before we knew Jesus, we were slaves to sin, fear, and the law. We lived under the tyranny of trying to earn God's favor through our own efforts. But when Christ came, everything changed.

The word "child" here is huios, which specifically refers to a son with full inheritance rights. In Roman culture, adopted children had the same legal standing as biological children. They could inherit everything their adoptive father owned. Paul is saying that's exactly what has happened to us spiritually.

As God's children, we're not just forgiven; we're family. We're not just servants; we're heirs. We don't have to beg for scraps from the table; we own the table. This isn't about earning our way into God's good graces; it's about receiving the full benefits of being His children.

Identify areas where you're still living like a slave instead of an heir. Are you trying to earn God's love through performance? Are you afraid to approach Him boldly? Today, practice coming to God as His beloved child, not as a fearful servant. Ask Him to help you live in the freedom of your true identity.

Prayer:
Abba Father, thank You for adopting me into Your family and making me an heir of Your kingdom. Forgive me for the times I've lived like a slave when You've called me to be Your child. Help me to walk in the freedom and confidence that comes from knowing I belong to You. Teach me to live as the heir You've made me to be. In Jesus' name, Amen.
