Living As Kingdom Citizens
"But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ." - Philippians 3:20
Your identity in Christ includes citizenship in God's kingdom. While you live in this world, you belong to another kingdom with different values, different priorities, and a different King. This dual citizenship shapes how you live in the present while anticipating the future.
Paul uses the metaphor of citizenship to describe our relationship to heaven. Just as earthly citizenship comes with rights, responsibilities, and identity, heavenly citizenship does the same. You're not just visiting God's kingdom; you're a citizen with all the privileges and responsibilities that entails.
The phrase "our citizenship is in heaven" is present tense. This isn't something that will be true someday; it's true right now. While you live on earth, your ultimate allegiance is to heaven. Your values, priorities, and identity are shaped by your heavenly citizenship.
The anticipation of Christ's return gives urgency and hope to this citizenship. You're not just a citizen of a distant kingdom; you're a citizen whose King is coming back. This hope shapes how you live in the present and gives you perspective on temporary earthly circumstances.
Consider how your citizenship in heaven should affect your daily life. What values, priorities, and behaviors should characterize citizens of God's kingdom? Ask God to help you live as a faithful citizen of heaven while being a positive influence on earth.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for making me a citizen of Your kingdom. Help me to live with the values, priorities, and hope that should characterize citizens of heaven. While I live on earth, keep my heart focused on my true home with You. Come quickly, Lord Jesus. In Your name, Amen.
