Pride Comes Before The Fall

“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” – Proverbs 16:18

When I was going through the process of being ordained as a pastor, I met weekly with a group of eight men. They would ask me questions and give me suggestions. What they were doing was making sure that I was equipped before they put their stamp of approval on me.

Well, the time came and we were about to walk into the service where I was going to be ordained, and right before we walked in, a man named Charlie pulled me aside, looked me in the eyes, and said, “Son, I’ve got one more thing to say.” Everyone stopped and Charlie grabbed me by the shoulders and said, “Be humble. Don’t let your pride getcha. Satan doesn’t use pride to hurt men of God…He uses pride to KILL men of God.”

I wish I could stand before you today and say that I’ve never had a problem with pride in my ministry, but I can’t.

There are times in all of our lives when we find ourselves in the cage of pride. And yet, God’s attitude toward pride is very clear: He HATES pride.

He says in Proverbs 8:13, “To fear the Lord is to hate evil. I hate arrogant pride…” This passage goes on to list 7 things God hates and PRIDE was the first thing out of His mouth. God HATES PRIDE.

That is why it is so important for us to be able to identify pride that can so quickly surround us and prevent us from walking freely in our relationship with Christ. Having said that, what are you prideful about? What do you think you have all the answers to? What area of your life do you feel like you don’t need God?

It is important to answer these questions if you want to avoid pride. The Bible clearly states in Proverbs 16:18, Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Make sure you eliminate pride so that you do not have the inevitable fall. Let God guide you and lead you, and avoid the consequences that come with a prideful heart.
