He Works Through Us

“Jesus called out to them, ‘Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!’” – Matthew 4:19

Over the last week, we have talked about an important job God asks of all His children. Once you have accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, He wants you to spread the good news of what He has done for you with others. He wants you to be a disciple for Him.

We have looked at the steps you can take to become a disciple. In the first step, Jesus initiates. He comes to us. After He comes to us, He changes us. And today we look at what happens after He changes us; He works through us.

Matthew 4:19 says, “Jesus called out to them, ‘Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!’” In other words, “follow me, and I will CHANGE YOU…follow me, and I will USE you. I will WORK THROUGH you.”

Jesus didn’t simply command His disciples to become fishers of people. He promised He would make them or cause them to fish for people.

You might ask, “How would following Jesus cause them to fish for people?” Well, the same way following Jesus causes us to fish for people. Let me tell you why disciples of Jesus fish for people: You become like those you spend time with. More is caught than taught and spending time with Jesus causes you to be like Jesus and the Bible says He came to seek and to save that which is lost.

The more time you spend with Jesus, the more like Jesus you become. He not only redeems us; He rubs off on us. Do we get that today? The more time we spend with Jesus, the more we become like Jesus!
