A Personal God

“When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that He was back home. Soon the house where He was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While He was preaching God’s word to them.” – Mark 2:1-2

Do you ever look at Jesus as this large object in the sky that is just too big to care about you? Maybe you think of Him as just the “Higher Power” or “The Man Upstairs.” These are phrases we use that acknowledge God but fail to understand the essence of who He is.

God created us in His image, and He is molding us to be like His Son, Jesus. God did not make us to be on our own. He made us because He wants to have a personal relationship with us. Does God feel personal to you?

Hold that question, and let’s look at a time when Jesus heals a paralyzed man in Mark 2. The story begins, “When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home.” This season in Jesus’ life is spent in the town that Jesus called home. And the house that is referred to in this story is Peter’s mother-in-law’s house, the home where Peter and Andrew lived.

This house wasn’t very large. It only had a couple of rooms separated by rock walls. Archeologists have also revealed that at the very center of the house, there was sort of a living room, a gathering space where people could congregate.

Verse 2 says, “Soon the house where He was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door, while He was preaching God’s word to them.”

That word ‘preaching’ or ‘speaking’ here is literally translated to mean ‘conversational speaking,’ so you can imagine Jesus in the center of the house, parked in this room with people all around Him, and He is speaking conversationally about the Gospel and the Kingdom of God.

Here Jesus is, in a room filled with people, just conversing. My friend, it doesn’t get any more personal than that. God is not just some large “Higher Power” sitting in the sky on His throne. He is in the trenches with you! He knows every little detail about your life, and He wants to be a part of every step of your journey. Is God personal for you? He is ready and waiting to be a part of your life in a personal way. So what are you waiting for?
