Fulfillment

“Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires.” – Psalm 37:4

As we close out the conversation we’ve been having about idolatry, we come to conclude our series of WHO’s and WHAT’s that might have your heart. It is a question we have been asking for about a week now. What is more important to you than the Lord? What do you give your thoughts, time, and resources to in place of Him?

We have talked about your stuff, your identity, pleasures you might seek, and relationships you have formed. But perhaps, in all of that, there is really something deeper you are searching for: fulfillment.

Think about it. Many people buy stuff to impress others and to portray themselves a certain way. Why? Perhaps when others think of them in a certain way, they believe they will be fulfilled. Some seek an identity. They want everyone to see them as “the pretty girl,” “the athlete,” or “the rich guy.” They invest every ounce of their time and resources to creating this identity, but for what? Fulfillment.

The same could be said for why so many people turn to alcohol, drugs, or sex (pleasures). Or why people dive into relationships prematurely. What they are really after is not the alcohol, the money, the stuff, or even the relationship. What they long for is fulfillment.

There is just one problem, none of these things will ever fulfill you. That is why you always feel like you need MORE alcohol. MORE sex. MORE clothes. MORE money. MORE friends. You ask MORE from your partner. Because nothing or no one on earth can fulfill you the way you need. You are playing a game you are guaranteed to lose.

God is the only true source of fulfillment. But the best part is that when you put Him in His rightful place, at the top of your priority list, and at the forefront of your life, YOU WILL find fulfillment. Not sometimes, not occasionally, but all the time.

My friend, the fulfillment you long for is readily available to you. But it’s not in the form of the things you have been chasing. If you want true fulfillment, it is found in Christ. He is waiting to fulfill your needs. Are you ready to turn to the only One who can truly fulfill you?
