The Real Superhero

“He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed. – 1 Peter 2:24

Whether it is Marvel or DC, we live in a world that is highly intrigued by superheroes. Obviously, the thought of what these characters can do is fascinating. They have superhuman powers that we as regular human beings could only dream of having.

And as interesting as the characters are, the storylines might be even more interesting. For the majority of these superheroes, the world they live in does not know their true identity. The world marvels at their incredible powers and is thankful they have them to protect the city, but they do not know anything about what is happening behind the scenes.

It is as if they took the storyline from the ultimate superhero, the REAL superhero, Jesus Christ. Today, Jesus is celebrated by believers for the incredible thing He did for us. That “thing” was dying on the cross. Both fully God and fully human, Jesus Christ came to earth, lived a sinless life, and then died for all the sinners in the world. He was and is the real-life superhero.

And the plot of Jesus’ story was very similar to the plot of a fictional superhero. Jesus saved the world, but they had no idea what He was dealing with behind the scenes. Before He was publicly brought to the cross, He was enslaved in a dark pit. And before that, He was arrested. And before that, He was pleading to God in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Remember, Jesus was God, but He was also fully human. And no human wants to die on a cross. He was pleading with God that there must be another way. Jesus did not wear a mask, but He still had struggles behind the scenes. He was tempted, He was grieving, and He was troubled.

Yet, in the face of all that, He never sinned. He remained perfect. And then, He went and did the greatest thing in the history of this world. He died. He died for you, and He died for me. Jesus is the real-life superhero!
