The Consequences

“So at last the king gave orders for Daniel to be arrested and thrown into the den of lions. The king said to him, ‘May your God, whom you serve so faithfully, rescue you.’” – Daniel 6:16

We have spent the last week talking about the courage of Daniel. Daniel overcame many fears in his life. He overcame the fear of missing out, the fear of other people, and the fear of radical obedience. He was constantly concerned only with obeying God, no matter the cost.

So, what was the cost, you ask? Like anything else, Daniel’s decisions and actions had consequences. There are always consequences for radical obedience. Daniel knew this, but he was confident that the safest thing he could do was to radically obey God.

Daniel’s consequence came in the form of being thrown in a den of hungry lions. King Darius ordered this after Daniel did not honor his law of praying to no one but the king. Daniel 6:16 says, “So at last the king gave orders for Daniel to be arrested and thrown into the den of lions. The king said to him, ‘May your God, whom you serve so faithfully, rescue you.’”

If you have been in church, or read this story in the Bible before, you probably know how this story ends.

It is one of the most famous stories in all of the Bible. Daniel survived the lion’s den. He was there all night with starving lions, and they didn’t touch him. See, when you radically obey God, above all else, there will be consequences. For Daniel, his faith was really tested as he was thrown into the lion’s den.

But here is the thing: God always honors obedience. And where God leads you, He will protect you. God did not ask Daniel to have courage, only to leave him out to dry. Daniel’s courage allowed God to demonstrate His power as He protected Daniel.

When you are obedient to God, it will result in earthly consequences, but the blessings from God are always greater. When you obey God, He will have your back, always. That is a promise you can bank on. The consequences are real, but so is God’s faithfulness!
