You Can’t Outrun God

“I sank down to the very roots of the mountains. I was imprisoned in the earth, whose gates lock shut forever. But you, O Lord my God, snatched me from the jaws of death!” – Jonah 2:6

If you followed along with us yesterday, you know we talked about the wrath of God. Because Jonah was disobedient, he experienced the wrath of God. How was Jonah disobedient, you ask? When God told him to “Get up” and go to the city of Nineveh, Jonah did the exact opposite. He went to Joppa and got on a boat that took him to Tarshish.

Now if you aren’t familiar with where Tarshish is, it is over 2,000 miles from Joppa. It is in the COMPLETE OPPOSITE DIRECTION from Nineveh where God was calling Jonah. But you know what? God still got a hold of Jonah. What Jonah learned is that you cannot outrun God.

Despite his best efforts, despite getting on a boat and heading in the complete opposite direction from where he was called, God was still there. God created the storm. And God had the fish swallow Jonah. There was nothing Jonah could do to outrun God.

And you know what? There is nothing you can do either. When you are His child, called to the specific purpose and plan He destined for you, nothing you do can keep God from making His will happen.

That should be a word of encouragement for you today. No matter what you have done, no matter how badly you think you might have screwed up, or no matter how far you feel like you currently are from God, He is right there. He was there with Jonah in the boat. He was with Jonah when he was thrown overboard, and He was with Jonah in the mouth of the fish.

Jonah could not outrun God, and neither can you. God is only one prayer away. No matter where you are, God is waiting. Turn back to Him. He is there ready to turn things around for you, today!
