Obeying The Lord

“If you love me, obey my commandments.” – John 14:15

If you want to leave a lasting legacy, one built on your faith in God, Joshua is a great figure to look at. Joshua built his legacy to the point that he has an entire book of the Bible named after him. Seems to be a common theme this month, right?

As we continue to look at Old Testament characters who displayed great courage and left a legacy that goes beyond their physical possessions, we look at Joshua. Joshua was a man not focused on his legacy but focused on pursuing God’s destiny for his life.

Joshua did this in two very specific ways: He walked by faith (as we looked at yesterday), and he obeyed the Lord. You cannot live a life that honors God without faith. Faith is the entire foundation of our relationship with God. But you also can’t honor Him without obedience.

God will not bless us if we are disobedient. As we saw with Jonah last week, you cannot expect to be blessed when you choose to disobey God. To leave a legacy, one that your kids and your kids’ kids will remember, you must remain obedient to God.

When we are obedient, God does His best work. God assumes ultimate responsibility for all outcomes when we are obedient to Him. He does not expect us to figure everything out. He just wants us to obey Him, step by step.

When we walk by faith, trusting Him and obeying Him, He will bless us. And those blessings are eternal. Many people think about the short-term blessings. Yes, God will bless your obedience during your time on earth. But He will also bless your obedience after your life too. When you trust and obey God, you will leave a legacy that will bless those who knew you long after you were gone.

I don’t know about you, but that is the legacy I want to leave! When you trust God, walk by faith, and obey God, He will work all the rest out!
