A Whisper

“His wife said to him, ‘Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die.” – Job 2:9

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you have lost everything? Maybe your life was going great, and all of a sudden it just all started falling apart. If so, you can relate to Job. Job was a good guy who was in Satan’s crosshairs. God allowed Satan to test Job.

And so, the devil took everything from Job. When Job passed the test, the devil threw more at him. In Job 2, we see him tested again. This time the devil attacked his body.

Job 2:6-8 says, “’All right, do with him as you please,’ the Lord said to Satan. ‘But spare his life.’ So Satan left the Lord’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot. Job scraped his skin with a piece of broken pottery as he sat among the ashes.”

Up to this point, Satan was working in his life. And he worked by attacking his kids, his fortune, his livestock, his livelihood, and his health. The devil was working in Job’s life by removing all the blessings that God had given him.

But then in verse 9, we see him attack from a different angle, “His wife said to him, ‘Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die.” Satan began by working on his life, but now Satan was whispering in his ear. Have you ever experienced something like that?

I’m sure most of us have experienced what seems like the devil working in our circumstances. We’ve known what it’s like to experience pain and loss and hardships. We know what it’s like to hurt.

But sometimes the thing that hurts even worse is the thing that enhances our suffering…the whispers of the evil one. The devil loves to whisper. Is he whispering in your life right now? Maybe he is telling you your circumstances aren’t going to get better, you’re not going to overcome your addiction, and you are not going to have the life you dreamed of.

Be careful what you are listening to. When you hear something that “speaks to your situation,” make sure it is God’s voice and not the devil’s whisper.
