A Sacrificial Love

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.” – 1 John 3:16

How can someone comprehend the love of God? When Paul talked about the length and width and height and depth of God’s love, I think it was because even he didn’t have the words to express how vast the love of God really is.

When Paul prayed that the church would be able to grasp and comprehend the magnitude of God’s love, I believe it is because he knew: if they grasp it, then they can live it…if they’ve experienced the love of God, they can demonstrate the love of God!

I mean, think about it. How vast is the love of God? How would you even define the love of God today? Well, we don’t have to wonder, because there are certain things we do know from His Word. Over the next four days, we are going to look at four important parts of God’s love.

The first thing we know is God’s love is sacrificial. 1 John 3:16 says, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.”

There is no greater form of love than this. God didn’t just say He loved us; He demonstrated it. How did He demonstrate it? He sent His ONE AND ONLY SON to DIE for you and me. Think about that for a second. If you are a parent, imagine choosing to sacrifice your own child for everyone else.

It is truly an amazing act that God would sacrifice His own Son. But He did so because He loved us. There are so many misconceptions about who God is. Some believe He is just a harsh judge that is out in this mythical galaxy. But that could not be further from the truth.

If you are His child, He is near to you. He isn’t just “out there somewhere.” He is near because He loves you. And we know He loves us because He sacrificed His own Son for YOU! There is no greater love than this, my friend!
