Walk Away from Darkness

“But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous, has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.” – Ephesians 5:3-5

In order to walk in the light, you must walk away from darkness. Paul explains this in Ephesians 5:3-5. In these verses, Paul is giving the church three examples of darkness, and these three examples would have been common things in their lives prior to them being saved and “in Christ.”

The verses say, “But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous, has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”

He talked about sexual immorality, greed, and impure talking. And what he was saying to them, was that when Jesus becomes the Lord of your life, and He fills you with His Spirit, that filling should empty you of the impurities that existed in your life prior to you knowing Christ.

You can’t be “filled” with something unless you are first “emptied” of everything else. That is what Paul is getting at. He was pointing to a few impure things from their previous lives that had no business being part of their new identity in Christ.

He showed them how when God replaces the old stuff with the new stuff, when he replaces the obscene and foolish joking with a mouth that gives, that small CHANGE gives evidence that a person has walked away from darkness and entered the light.

Do you want to fill with the Spirit? Do you want to walk in the light? It starts by emptying yourself of all the impurities in your life. Walk away from darkness, so that you can enter into the light.
