Your Jerusalem

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” – Acts 1:8

Before Jesus left earth, He gave us a command. He told us exactly what our mission is. And what is that mission? It’s the Great Commission. Jesus instructed us to preach the gospel, baptize new believers, and disciple those who receive Christ.

That is the WHAT that Jesus has told us to do. Now, what about WHERE? You might be saying, “Pastor, that is great. I get it. I get what Jesus wants me to do, now where do I do that?”

Acts 1:8 gives us insight into WHERE we should live out this mission. The verse says, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Now you might be wondering, “Okay… but pastor I don’t live in this area.” So let’s break it down. What does He mean? What does this mean for you? See, your Jerusalem is your city or community.

Jerusalem was the community, the city where Jesus’ ministry took place. And that is where your ministry should start. Listen, this does not mean that you have to be a preacher or an evangelist. God has a different vocation for every person.

God wants you to use the gifts and abilities you have to point others to His name. And He wants you to do that starting in your own community. Sometimes we make the mistake of thinking that following God means we are going to have to pack our bags and move halfway around the world.

And while for some that might be true, for most of us, it starts RIGHT HERE in our own community. Jerusalem is your city. Start where you’re at, and share Jesus in your own community!
