Alter, Add, and Abandon

“You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.” – Genesis 2:17

When Eve talked to the serpent, she made one very big mistake: she ALTERED the Word of God. What the Lord said in Genesis 2:17 was, “You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.”

But when the serpent questioned her, she said, “We may eat the fruit from the trees in the garden. But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, ‘You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.’”

Right away, we see that Eve left out the word “certainly.” Then she said God told her not to touch the tree when God didn’t say that. This means that not only did she ALTER the Word of God, but she ADDED to the Word of God.

Maybe you’re thinking, “Well, that’s not a big deal. It’s just a few words different.” Listen, anytime someone alters the Word of God or adds to the Word of God, it is a REALLY BIG DEAL!

When you become okay with altering or adding to God’s Word, it won’t be long before you are okay with abandoning God’s Word. That is what Eve did, and it all began with a tiny seed of doubt.

As we said yesterday, God means what He says and says what He means. The Bible was written with specific instructions, and God’s words are exact. We don’t need to alter or add. When we do, we are devaluing the exactness and specificness of what God was talking about.

And when you don’t prioritize or value the specificness, it becomes easier to abandon. Do not alter, add, or abandon God’s Word. He means what He says. The devil will try to question Him. Your friends will try to question Him. The world will try to question Him.

God is never to be questioned. Obey Him, no matter what it is. You will never regret obedience to God! All choices have consequences. The choice of obedience will result in blessing every time.
