Beyond Words and Into Action

“Whoever says, ‘I know Him,’ but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.” – 1 John 2:4

It’s a sobering truth that mere words professing our love for Jesus are insufficient if our lives are marked by a continual choice to live in sin. We can’t simply claim to love Him and then persist in actions that contradict His teachings. True love for Jesus demands more than empty declarations or mere association with His people or church. It requires genuine transformation, a life that reflects His commands.

The apostle John in 1 John 2:4 is blunt in his assessment: “Whoever says, ‘I know Him,’ but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.” In other words, our words and professions of faith must be matched by our actions and obedience to Jesus’ teachings.

Loving Jesus is not merely about being in His presence, attending church services, or associating with fellow believers. While these are important aspects of our faith, they fall short if our hearts and actions do not align with His will. True love for Jesus is demonstrated through a transformed life that seeks to follow His commands.

We can’t claim to love Jesus while knowingly and willfully participating in sinful behaviors that contradict His teachings. This doesn’t mean we will never stumble or sin, for all have fallen short of the glory of God. However, it means that our heart’s desire should be to honor Him and repent when we fall short.

To truly love Jesus, we must be committed to a life that continually seeks to align with His ways. This involves reading and meditating on His Word, prayer, and daily surrender to His will. It means striving to love our neighbors as ourselves and showing grace, forgiveness, and kindness to others. It means turning away from sinful habits and seeking His help to overcome them.

In essence, genuine love for Jesus is a love that transforms. It takes our old self, marked by sin and disobedience, and reshapes it into a new creation in Christ. It’s a love that compels us to pursue holiness and righteousness, not as a means of earning salvation but as a response to the love and grace we have received from Him.

True love for Jesus goes beyond empty words and outward appearances. It’s a love that transforms our hearts and lives, causing us to align with His commands and seek His will above all else. Let your love for Him be evident in your obedience and actions, as you strive to live out His teachings in all you do.
