The Gift and Growth of Self-Control

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” – 2 Peter 1:3

Today, I want to share a profound truth that can transform the way you view your journey with Christ. Self-control is not just a personal struggle; it’s a gift and a promise from God to every person who truly knows Christ. In fact, it’s part of a divine package given to us by God, beginning at the time of our salvation. But here’s the even more remarkable part: these gifts are not just given; they are also grown by God as we pursue a deeper relationship with Christ.

The apostle Peter’s words in 2 Peter 1:3 affirm this truth: “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” When we enter into a relationship with Jesus, we receive an abundance of gifts, including self-control. However, the growth and development of these gifts depend on our pursuit of Christ and our willingness to be transformed.

What does this mean for our lives as believers? It means that when you were first saved, your self-control wasn’t where it is today, and it shouldn’t stop growing. The longer you walk with Jesus, the more you should become like Him. Self-control, like other fruits of the Spirit, should ripen and mature over time.

As we seek to know Christ more deeply, His Spirit works within us, strengthening our self-control and helping us overcome the temptations and weaknesses that once held us captive. It’s a journey of transformation, a process known as sanctification, in which we become more like our Savior. Our self-control grows as we rely on God’s power, leaning on Him in moments of weakness, and submitting to His guidance.

In your walk with Christ, don’t be discouraged by past failures or areas where self-control seems lacking. Remember that these gifts are given by God and are meant to grow in you. Pursue Christ with a hungry heart, seek His presence in prayer, and immerse yourself in His Word.

Embrace the truth that self-control is both a gift and a promise from God. It is given to you at the moment of salvation and is meant to grow as you walk with Jesus. Your journey with Christ is a continual transformation, one that leads you to become more like Him, self-control and all.
