A Threefold Cord in Marriage

“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” – Genesis 2:24

Let’s dive into the beauty of marriage, the kind that Jesus spoke about when he quoted Genesis 2:24. In that verse, the word for ONE is “Echad” – a Hebrew term that paints a picture of unity through plurality. It’s a concept that celebrates uniqueness and differences but emphasizes that through God, two can become one.

When Jesus said we should become ONE with our spouse, he was talking about more than just a legal union. It’s about a profound sense of unity between husband and wife, a unity that goes beyond the surface and touches the very core of our being.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 says, “Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts… A cord of three strands is not easily broken.” This paints a vivid picture of the strength that comes from unity. If one falls, the other can lift them up. If they lie down together, they can keep warm. And if someone tries to overpower them, two can resist. But the kicker is that third strand – a cord of three strands is not easily broken.

Marriage isn’t just about you and your spouse. It’s about inviting God into the equation, making Him the third strand that weaves through your union. It’s the divine thread that adds strength and resilience to the fabric of your relationship.

A two-strand rope might hold for a while, but add that third strand, and you’ve got a cord that can withstand the storms. The unity of “Echad” in marriage involves recognizing that God is an integral part of your union, bringing His love, wisdom, and grace to strengthen the bond between husband and wife.

As you navigate the journey of marriage, remember the power of “Echad.” Embrace the unity through plurality, and let God be the third strand that makes your marriage not just strong but unbreakable.
