A Call for Courage

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” – 1 Corinthians 15:58

What is the most courageous thing you have ever done? Stop and think about it. What is something you have done that took great courage? When you hear a story of someone acting courageously, it is inspiring.

When I think about stories involving courage, I think about Harriet Tubman leading slaves to freedom on the underground railroad, or Anne Frank living in secret and hiding people from the Nazis, or Martin Luther King Jr. standing up for equal rights, or the first responders and citizens who rushed into the wreckage on 9/11 to save complete strangers.

There are so many people who have personified courage in inspiring ways through the years. It is not only inspiring, but it is also convicting to some degree. I was thinking about my own personal “courage stories” this week, and the best I could come up with is…I delivered puppies in a bathtub one time…without wearing gloves.

In all seriousness, let me ask you again: What is the most courageous thing you have ever done? And why did you do it? When you start thinking about these stories of courageous individuals, what you will learn is that people that demonstrate great courage always have a good reason for doing so. That is not only true today, but it has been true since the very beginning.

Over the next few weeks, we are going to be looking at characters from the Old Testament, characters who were normal people on planet earth just like us. And yet, God recorded their stories so that we could learn from their lives and hopefully become more like Him as a result.

As we unpack these stories, you will see how these people were no different from you and me. But they chose to do something that was so impactful that God had someone record it. What you will see as we dive deeper into these stories is that when they had to make the choice to be courageous, they did not know the outcome. They could not see up ahead, but they chose to trust God anyway.

Acts of courage are not only inspiring, but they can also be convicting. Is God calling you to do something that involves having courage? You might not know the outcome, but God wants you to trust Him!
