Serving God or Serving You?

“And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, chose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15

I read this week that the average person makes 35,000 decisions in a single day. Think about that. 35,000 times a day we make a choice about something. That stresses me out just thinking about it!

This reality feels very true to me when I think about going to the Cheesecake Factory. Whenever I’m there, I feel like I am going to break out in hives because there are so many choices! And then, when I finally do make a decision and order my entrée, I start to think about the hundreds of other good options I didn’t choose. Can you relate?

We make choices every single day. Go to a grocery store today, and you know what you’ll find? 85 different variations of crackers…I am serious! My kids asked me to grab some goldfish a while back, and do you want to guess how many kinds of goldfish there were? 21! There were different flavors and sizes to choose from. That’s true in just about every single category in the grocery store.

There are so many decisions we have to make on a daily basis. And while some are far less consequential, others can have massive implications for our future. When it comes to making important decisions, ask yourself this question: Is this decision a reflection of serving God or a reflection of serving myself?

Joshua 24:15 says, “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, chose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

There are so many decisions to make on a daily basis. Some are simple and small, and others are bigger and more complex. For the decisions that really matter, ask yourself, who am I serving? If the answer isn’t God, you might want to reevaluate your decision.
