Build the Fence Early
“But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” – Matthew 5:28
I want to let you in on a little secret today. You don’t need to be married to start guarding your marriage. That’s right, you don’t need to be in a crisis to start defending your integrity. If sin works from the inside out, then you’d better build your defense from the inside out, too.
Jesus made it clear, sin doesn’t just show up one day out of nowhere. It starts when your eyes wander where they shouldn’t. It grows when your mind lingers on things that pull you away from God. It builds momentum when your heart starts justifying what you used to call out. And if you don’t stop it there, it will eventually shape how you live.
That’s why God tells us to guard our eyes, our minds, our hearts, and our thoughts. Because sin doesn’t need a big opening. It only needs a crack. One unchecked glance. One fantasy you don’t shut down. One private thought you keep feeding instead of taking captive. It doesn’t take long before what started as curiosity turns into a chain.
If you want to walk in purity, you need more than good intentions. You need structure. Boundaries. Convictions. You need God’s Word stored deep in your heart, where it can speak before temptation does. You need a steady mindset that isn’t constantly distracted by the world. You need to guard what goes in your eyes because it’s going to show up in your life.
Whether you’re married or not, today is the day to start protecting the covenant, yours or your future one. Your integrity isn’t built on the day you say “I do.” It’s built in the small decisions you make when no one’s watching. You can’t wait until you’re falling to start fighting. Build the fence before the enemy gets to the gate.
