Rooted in the Rock

"And everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock" - Matthew 7:24.

A massive storm swept through Northern California a few years back, tearing down trees that had stood for centuries. One by one, the giant redwoods and pines came crashing to the ground. All except one. There was a single tree that stood tall after the storm passed. It wasn’t because it was the thickest or newest. The reason it stood was because its roots had pushed over 100 feet into the ground and latched onto bedrock. Everything else gave way, but not that one.

That tree is a picture of the kind of faith Jesus is calling you to live with. Not shallow. Not surface-level. But anchored. Rooted. Unshakable. Because when the storms come (and they will), it won’t be the appearance that matters. It’ll be the foundation.

You’ve probably seen someone who looked solid for a season. Churchgoing. Bible quoting. Even posting verses online. But then something happens. Crisis. Disappointment. Temptation. And just like that, they crumble. What happened? Most of the time, they weren’t rooted. They were active but not anchored. Involved but not surrendered.

Jesus didn’t come just to be admired. He came to be obeyed. And He makes it clear that the ones who stand are the ones who listen to His words and put them into practice. This isn’t about appearances or behavior modification. It’s about surrender. About letting His words shape your decisions, your priorities, and your identity.

So let me ask you, what’s beneath your surface? Is your faith tied to the Rock, or is it sitting on sand? Are you deeply rooted, or just barely holding on? Because when life hits, and it will, you won’t have time to scramble for stability. You’ll either be rooted or you won’t.

Dig deep today. Anchor your heart in Christ. Because when your roots reach the Rock, the storm can shake you, but it won’t take you.
