The Cross Made You Belong

“He is also the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile everything to himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” - Colossians 1:18-20

Every church building has a different name out front. Some say Baptist. Others say Methodist, Pentecostal, or Non-Denominational. But despite what the sign says, there is only one true head of the church, and His name is Jesus.

He is not just a good teacher or an influential figure in history. He is the firstborn from the dead, the beginning of something brand new, and the One who holds first place in everything. He is the one who rules the church, fills the church, and gave His life for the church.

When Paul says Jesus reconciled all things to Himself, he uses a word that means to restore something broken. What was broken? We were. Humanity was fractured by sin and separated from God. And the cross is what made the way for us to come back home. You were not just a little messed up. According to Scripture, you were spiritually dead. Ephesians 2:1 says, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins.” That means your problem was not just behavioral. It was foundational. You did not need a life coach. You needed a Savior.

Jesus came to rescue the dead, not just repair the damaged. He came to raise the spiritually lifeless and bring them into a new family with a new future. Luke 19:10 says, “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” That is what the cross accomplished. It did not just wipe your record clean. It wrote your name into a new family story. The cross did not just deal with your guilt. It gave you a place to belong.

Romans 5 reminds us that this reconciliation happened while we were still God’s enemies. It was not something we earned. It was something He gave. And now that we have been restored, we do not have to wonder where we stand. In Christ, we are part of the church. We are no longer lost. We are home.
