Trusting The Compass When You Lose Your Way
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” - Proverbs 16:9
Have you ever gotten lost in the woods? Maybe you followed a deer trail or wandered off the beaten path, only to turn around and realize every tree suddenly looks the same. When your instincts tell you one thing and your compass points in another direction, you are faced with a choice, do you trust your feelings, or do you trust the compass?
Life often feels this way. We plan, we prepare, and we think we know the way forward. But then life changes unexpectedly - a job loss, a health scare, a family challenge - and we can feel completely disoriented. Faith is an adventure, but every adventure includes moments when we lose our bearings. When confusion comes, our first instinct is often to panic or rely on our logic to get out, but God invites us to rely entirely on Him.
The Bible gives us comfort and direction. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” We can make plans and seek wisdom, but at the end of the day, God sees the bigger picture and leads us safely through. Our job is to take the next faithful step in the direction He points, even if we cannot see the whole path ahead.
If you are carrying burdens, whether it is anxiety about your marriage, your children, or the future, I want to encourage you to bring those struggles into the light. Don’t continue to hide what Jesus came to heal. Remember, you do not have to navigate these unknowns alone. Surround yourself with your church community, lean on trusted friends, and keep God’s Word as your true north.
When life feels uncertain, practice this simple rhythm: don’t just worry. Worship. Don’t just panic. Pray. Don’t just seek control. Seek the Kingdom. God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, so let’s walk in it together. The Bible is our compass, and God will never let us wander alone.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, help us when we feel lost in the woods of life. Remind us that Your Word is our true compass and that You see what we cannot. Give us the courage to trust You with each step and bring our struggles into the light of Your truth. Unite our families and strengthen our community as we follow wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name, amen.
