Ready With A Reason

“…but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.” — 1 Peter 3:15 (CSB)

Read that verse slowly and you'll notice Peter makes an assumption that ought to make us all a little uncomfortable. He assumes people are going to ask.

He takes it for granted that the way a believer handles a hard season will be so noticeably different from the way the world handles one that somebody will eventually stop and ask what's going on. That's a bold assumption. It's also a good diagnostic. If nobody has ever asked you about your hope, it's worth asking why.

Because here's how it works. When the world watches somebody walk through loss without falling apart, or face an uncertain diagnosis without becoming bitter, or lose something significant and still choose gratitude, it creates a question the world genuinely cannot answer. Where does that come from? It doesn't compute.

And Peter says your job is to be ready when the question comes.

Notice what he's asking for. Not a theological argument. Not a rehearsed presentation with four points. A reason for the hope that is in you. That's a testimony. It's you being able to say, in plain words, "He's why I'm still standing. He's why I have peace in this. He's why I haven't given up."

You don't need seminary for that. You need to have actually experienced it, and you need to not be scared to say so.

Which means the way you're carrying this season is not a private matter. Your perseverance is evangelism whether you intended it that way or not. PEOPLE ARE WATCHING HOW YOU HANDLE THIS.

That's not pressure. That's purpose.

Think about how you're carrying your current difficulty in front of the people who see you every day. Is anything about it raising questions? You can go through this season privately, or you can go through it in a way that makes somebody ask. Which one are you doing?

Prayer
Lord, help me live in a way that makes people curious. Let the hope I have in You be visible enough and unexplainable enough that somebody asks me about it. And when they do, give me the words and the boldness to point them straight to You. Make my life a testimony, not just my words. In Jesus' name, Amen.
