Every Good Gift

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” — James 1:17 (CSB)

Ask anybody who's ever gotten a gift they didn't deserve and they'll remember it longer than the ones they expected. There's something about undeserved generosity that sticks. It changes how you see the person who gave it.

James wants you to look at your whole life that way. Every good and perfect gift. Not most of them. Not the obviously spiritual ones. Every single good thing you have traces back to one hand.

The friendship that's held you together this year. The job. The coffee you're drinking. The lungs that filled when you woke up this morning. James says pull the thread on any of it and you end up at the same place.

Then he gives God a title worth sitting with: the Father of lights. In the ancient world people worshiped the sun and stars, and those lights shift. They rise, set, and throw shadows that move all day long.

James says God made those lights, and unlike them, He doesn't move. His generosity isn't seasonal. His grace isn't running on a timer that might expire while you're not looking.
Here's the honest problem. Gratitude doesn't come naturally to any of us. Our default is to take credit for what we earned and complain about what hasn't shown up yet. Nobody drifts into thankfulness.

Notice James doesn't say every easy gift, or every gift you'd have chosen. Perfect here means complete, fitted exactly to what you needed, which is not always what you asked for.
Which means gratitude has to be built, the way a habit gets built, one deliberate choice at a time. And it starts by looking up instead of around.

The difference between a lucky person and a grateful one isn't their circumstances. It's whether they know who to thank. YOU ARE NOT LUCKY. You're loved, and every good thing in your hands is evidence of it.

Name five specific good gifts in your life right now, and trace each one back to God out loud. You can keep calling your life lucky, or you can start calling it what it is. Which word are you going to use?

Prayer
Father of lights, You do not shift and You do not change. Forgive me for taking Your gifts and forgetting Your hand. Today I want to see my ordinary life the way You see it, full of things I never earned. Teach me to look up before I look around. In Jesus' name, Amen.
