Not Your Own

“Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Yesterday, we talked about your identity. Have you ever asked yourself the question “Who am I?” If you are a believer, someone who has given their life to Jesus Christ, then you already have the answer to that question: you are His.

You are in Christ. That is your identity. And if you are “in Christ,” you are not your own. The word “identity” speaks of “the way we define ourselves.” It’s who you say you are. It’s who you believe that you are.

But Paul shows us that if we are saved, that our identity is not for us to define. Because WE don’t belong to US anymore! 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body.”

If we’ve been BOUGHT at a price, if we have the HOLY SPIRIT in us, and we have been MADE NEW because of Jesus, then Paul tells us our identity is now in HIM!

He bought us! We belong to Him, and therefore, our identity should be in Him. We don’t have the privilege of redefining the things that God clearly defines in His word, and in this text, He clearly said to those who truly believe and those who have been transformed that your identity is IN CHRIST.

Belonging to Christ is the greatest identity you could possibly have. But you must understand what comes with it. And that means that you no longer answer to yourself. You are not your own. When you are His, He is in control. He is the authority.

Are you living according to your true identity? Are you living as if you are His? If He is your Lord and Savior, you belong to Him, and He wants that to bleed into every aspect of your life. Live for the one who bought you for a great price!
