TURNING A LOOK TO LUST

“For all that is in this world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.” – 1 John 2:16

One thing the devil is really good at is turning our looks into lust. Meaning, he takes what we think is “just a look” or “just a peak,” and turns it into a full-on desire. The devil loves when we start looking. Genesis 3 says “The woman saw…”

If someone ever says to you, “Ah, come on, there is no harm in looking.” They don’t know what they are talking about. What we see in Genesis 3 is Satan uses Eve’s look to create a desire in her heart.

She saw a tree that would make her stronger, and it appealed to her physically. She saw a tree that was pleasant to her eyes, and it appealed to her emotionally. And she saw a tree that would make her wise, and it appealed to her pride.

John spoke of all three of these in 1 John 2:16, “For all that is in this world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.”

That is the exact same way the devil tempted Jesus. He appealed to Him physically by offering Him bread to eat when He was hungry. He appealed to Him emotionally by offering Him possessions of the world. He appealed to His pride by offering Him world recognition.

These forms of lust are nothing new. The devil has been using them since the beginning of time. And they are the same types of lustful desires he preys on us with, today.

Be careful where you look because the devil can turn a look into lust very quickly. The Bible says do not give the devil a foothold. Do you know how you avoid the foothold? Don’t look. Instead, fix your eyes on the things of God.
