YOUR NEW NORM

February 28, 2023

“Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.” – Luke 12:33

Yesterday, we looked at why we shouldn’t steal. Stealing always stems from a sinful source. We steal when we don’t feel like we’re getting what we deserve. We steal when we covet. We steal when we are greedy and feel entitled to more. All stealing comes from a sinful seed.

On the other hand, generosity is always a sign or evidence of the new self in Christ. So, for that reason, Paul said instead of being a thief that steals, do honest work with your own hands, SO THAT you have something to share.

Ephesians 4:28 says, “Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.” – Ephesians 4:28

Luke even goes a step further in Luke 12 saying, “Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.”

Instead of feeling entitled or greedy, God wants generosity to become your new norm. It shouldn’t be that one act of generosity is highlighted because it is so rare. Instead, that is your new norm.

Imagine if they showed every 3-foot put a pro golfer made? That would get boring really quickly, right? Because that is normal; they do it all the time. The same should be said for you when it comes to acts of generosity.

God hasn’t called us to “get ours” selfishly. He wants us to further His Kingdom, and one of the best ways to do that is to make generosity your new norm!
