FREEDOM FROM UNHEALTHY FEARS

July 17, 2023

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!'” – Romans 8:15

Fear has a way of gripping our hearts and holding us captive. It can wrap its chains around our thoughts, paralyzing us from living a life of freedom and joy. In his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul draws a stark contrast between unhealthy fears and the liberating truth of God’s love and adoption. Let’s explore how we can break free from the chains of fear and embrace the freedom found in Christ.

In Romans 8:15, Paul reminds us that as children of God, we have not received a spirit of slavery that leads us back into fear. He points out that our adoption as sons and daughters by the Spirit of God has granted us a new identity and freedom from the bondage of fear. This comparison highlights the destructive nature of unhealthy fears and the transformative power of God’s love.

Unhealthy fears can hold us back from experiencing the abundant life God intends for us. They can limit our potential, hinder our relationships, and stifle our faith. When we allow fear to control us, we become enslaved to its grip, unable to fully embrace the plans and purposes God has for our lives.

However, in Christ, we have been set free. Through His sacrifice on the cross, He broke the chains of fear and ushered in a new era of liberation. As children of God, we are now heirs of His kingdom, intimately connected to our Heavenly Father. This newfound relationship empowers us to cry out, “Abba! Father!”—a term of endearment that reflects the deep intimacy and security we have in Him.

We must actively reject the lies of fear and embrace the truth of God’s love and grace. When anxious thoughts and worries arise, we can counter them with the promises found in Scripture. We can remind ourselves that God is in control, that He is faithful, and that He has a plan for our lives. By shifting our focus from our fears to the faithfulness of our Father, we experience the freedom to live boldly and confidently.

In Christ, we are no longer slaves to fear but children of God, called to live lives filled with courage, hope, and love.
