Identity Theft

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." - John 10:10

Has the devil stolen your identity? If you’re not careful, he will have you believing you are someone you are not and have you chasing things you were never meant to chase.

Let me tell you why this is so dangerous: When our identity is stolen by the devil, our focus shifts to vain pursuits instead of our eternal purpose. We end up chasing things that do not and cannot satisfy. Some of us are there already.

We’ve been saved. We’ve committed our lives to following Christ, but somewhere along the way, our response to the devil’s enticement has caused our identity “in Christ” to be hijacked. The devil is in the identity theft business.

When I think about how the devil works, I think about the last time I went to the carnival. While I was there, I walked through one of those Fun House mirror mazes with my kids. It was bizarre. I ran into myself like 5 times! But the crazy thing was… I’d turn one corner and I’d see myself short and squatty… then I’d turn another corner and I’d appear in the mirror to be 8 feet tall.

Carnival Mirrors reflect a distorted image of who we are. They’re not accurate. They’re not showing a true picture of who you are. But sometimes, because you see it, you begin to believe it. You think, “This must be who I am!”

Tony Merida once said, “The One on whom you fix your eyes is both the source and the object of your identity.”

And that’s true. If you fix your eyes on the distorted image of yourself that the devil wants you to see, you are in danger of becoming that image in your mind. But on the other hand, when we fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, we can then see the person that God created us to be.

You must be intentional about guarding your identity in Christ. Resist the devil’s attempts to distort who you are and instead fix your eyes on Jesus, the true source of your identity. In Him, we find our true worth, purpose, and fulfillment.
