The Danger of Tolerance
"But I have this against you: You tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess..." - Revelation 2:20
In Revelation 2:20, Jesus addresses the church at Thyatira with a serious critique—they had become known as the TOLERANT Church. While tolerance in itself is often seen as a virtue, Jesus condemns their tolerance of false teachings and practices that contradict His Word. Specifically, He mentions their tolerance of someone described as "Jezebel," who promoted herself as a prophetess but led others astray.
During the early days of Christianity, navigating the boundary between faith and cultural norms was challenging. The church at Thyatira struggled with this balance, accommodating practices and beliefs that were contrary to God's truth. This tolerance wasn't merely about being accepting of diverse opinions; it involved compromising foundational principles of faith to appease cultural pressures.
Today, we face a similar challenge. Our society increasingly embraces moral relativism, where truth and morality are viewed as subjective and flexible according to cultural shifts. Many argue that the church must adapt its teachings to align with current societal norms to remain relevant. However, this approach risks diluting the gospel message and compromising biblical truth.
Jesus's critique of the church at Thyatira serves as a cautionary tale for us. Tolerance of falsehood, whether in doctrine or practice, undermines the integrity of our faith. It blurs the distinction between light and darkness, truth and deception. As followers of Christ, we are called to stand firm on the unchanging truth of God's Word, regardless of cultural trends or societal expectations.
The apostle Paul exhorted the church in Romans 12:2 to not conform to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This transformation comes through discernment rooted in Scripture and guided by the Holy Spirit. We must prayerfully seek God's wisdom to distinguish between what aligns with His truth and what contradicts it.
Jesus's words challenge us to uphold biblical standards without compromise. It's not about rejecting people but standing firm on the unchanging principles of God's Word. As we navigate a world that pressures us to conform, I encourage you to remain steadfast in faith, relying on the Holy Spirit to guide you in truth and righteousness.
