Passion Over Complacency

“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” - Revelation 3:15-16

In His letter to the church at Laodicea, Jesus declares, “I am the originator of God’s creation.” This doesn't mean Jesus was God’s first creation. Instead, it proclaims that through Him, all things were created.

It was Jesus who placed the stars in the sky, dug the seas, and arranged the mountains. No blade of grass grows without His permission, and no speck of dust moves without His knowledge. Jesus is the AMEN, the faithful and true witness, and the ruler of God’s creation.

In Revelation 3:15-16, Jesus says, “I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” This strong rebuke addresses the church’s lack of passion. Jesus desires a church full of fervor and zeal, not one that is complacent and indifferent.

Laodicea was a lukewarm church. They were not passionate and fervent for God, nor were they completely cold and indifferent. They were tepid, a state that made Jesus want to spit them out. Imagine drinking a lukewarm beverage—it’s unappealing. Jesus is making it clear that He desires a church full of passion and zeal, not one that is complacent and indifferent.

But this isn’t just for the church of Laodicea, it is for you and me, today. Are you on fire for Jesus, or have you become lukewarm? Jesus, the Creator of all things, calls you to be passionate in your faith. He knows your works, sees your heart, and desires your wholehearted devotion. Don’t let complacency creep in. Reignite your passion for the One who created you and knows you intimately.

Remember, the same Jesus who arranged the stars in the sky knows your every thought and action. He deserves nothing less than your full dedication. So, examine your heart. Are you hot, cold, or lukewarm? Jesus calls you to be fervent in your faith. Draw near to Him and let your heart burn brightly for your Heavenly Father.
