What Are You Wearing?

"But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self." - Colossians 3:8-9

Mark Twain once said, “Clothes make the man.” He wasn’t just talking about fashion, but about how what we wear reflects who we are. Think about it, what are you wearing today?

Your clothes can tell a lot about you: your profession, your passion, your preferences. Uniforms identify careers. Favorite team jerseys reveal sports enthusiasm. Fashion choices can express whether you’re more traditional or trendsetting.

But Paul, in Colossians 3, talks about an even more important wardrobe. He tells us to take off our “natural clothes,” the things that represent our old, sinful ways—and to put on something new.

Paul says to “put away” things like anger, wrath, malice, and filthy language. These are the clothes of the old self, the part of us that lived without Christ. When we lie, slander others, or live out of bitterness, it’s as though we’re wearing our natural clothes—the old life that has no place in the kingdom of God.

But if you’re in Christ, God has called you to something different. You’re not meant to wear the old self anymore. Instead, you are to put on the new self, the self that reflects who you are in Jesus.

In verse 12, Paul tells us what these new clothes look like: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. These are the clothes of righteousness that God has provided for you. Just like how our clothes show who we are in the world, your new clothes in Christ reflect your identity as God’s chosen, holy, and dearly loved child.

So, ask yourself—what are you wearing today? Are you still holding on to the anger, the lies, the grudges? Or are you choosing to put on the new clothes of compassion, love, and gentleness that God has given you?

You’ve been given a new wardrobe in Christ. It’s time to take off the old and put on the new. Let what you wear reflect who you are in Him.
