The Power of Jesus' Teachings

“Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them.” - Luke 6:31

Did you know that Jesus’ teaching on kindness wasn’t entirely original? Long before Jesus walked the earth, similar principles were spoken by various thinkers and religious leaders. Confucius, for instance, advised, “Do not unto others what you would not wish done to yourself.”

The Buddhists taught, “Putting oneself in the place of others, kill not, nor cause to kill.” In the Old Testament Apocrypha, the book of Tobit says, “Do not do to anyone what you yourself hate.” Rabbi Hillel, around 20 B.C., summarized it as, “What is hateful to you, do not do to anyone else.”

On the surface, these teachings seem to echo Jesus’ words. However, there’s a crucial difference. Where these earlier teachings say “do not” or “refrain from,” Jesus calls us to action: “Do the same for them.”

Jesus knew that a transformed life isn’t simply about avoiding wrong actions. It’s about a complete change in our being. When Jesus transforms our hearts, He doesn’t just make us better at refraining from bad behavior, He empowers us to actively live out His love and grace.

Think about it: Jesus isn’t just asking us to avoid hurting others; He’s urging us to actively seek their good. This shift from “do not” to “do” reflects a deeper change within us. It’s not about the bare minimum of ethical behavior but about embodying a new way of living that mirrors His own love and compassion.

Let me ask you today, has Jesus truly changed your life? Has He transformed your heart and filled you with His Spirit? If you’re living with the transformative power of Jesus, you’ll find that kindness and love flow from you naturally, not just as an avoidance of harm but as an active pursuit of good for others.
