The Messiah We Didn’t Expect
"For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6
Have you ever wondered what the Israelites were expecting in a Messiah? Their waiting was filled with anticipation, shaped by prophecies and promises that painted a picture of a leader who would save them. Yet, as we see in the life of Jesus, their expectations and the reality of God’s plan looked very different.
For centuries, the Israelites waited for a Jewish leader who would inspire the nation, a charismatic figure who would draw them together and renew their faith. They were looking for someone like Moses or David, a leader who could unite them under a common purpose.
The Israelites were also waiting for a leader from the tribe of Judah, in the line of David and Solomon, to fulfill ancient promises. This Messiah would not only be a great spiritual leader but also a military figure, one who would free them from oppression. Having faced captivity and exile, they longed for someone who would lead them to victory, restoring their place as God’s people in their own land. To them, the Messiah was a warrior as much as a king, and they expected a powerful military presence that would help them reclaim their freedom.
But then came Jesus. He wasn’t just another leader or prophet. He didn’t come with a political agenda, nor did He organize armies to overthrow Rome. Instead, He arrived as a baby, born in humble circumstances, fully God and fully man, fulfilling every prophecy in ways they hadn’t anticipated.
Isaiah’s words pointed to a Messiah who would be more than a charismatic leader or a fair judge; He would be the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Jesus was the Savior they needed, but not the one they had expected. His power was shown through sacrifice, His leadership through love, His justice through mercy, and His kingdom in the hearts of those who believed.
As you think about Jesus, remember that God’s promises don’t always look the way we imagine. Sometimes He meets our expectations, but often He exceeds them in ways we can’t predict. When you’re waiting on God, remember that He’s always fulfilling His promises, even if His way of doing so surprises you.
