Joy Beyond Doubt
"But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind." - James 1:6-8
Have you ever noticed how doubt drains joy? When doubts creep in, it feels like you’re tossed around by every uncertainty, just like James describes—a surging sea, unsteady and turbulent. When doubt takes root, it clouds our view of God’s promises, making joy feel distant or even unattainable.
The shepherds in the Christmas story remind us what happens when we move beyond doubt and take steps of faith. They had every reason to question the angel’s message, after all, they were unlikely candidates to receive a divine announcement. Yet, they chose to trust and go see Jesus for themselves. And when they arrived, their response was pure joy. They praised God, their hearts brimming with the joy that comes only from encountering the Savior.
Similarly, Simeon and Anna had spent years waiting on God’s promise of a Messiah, even as time passed and challenges persisted. They didn’t let doubt distract them from the promise; they chose to focus on what God had said instead of the problems around them.
And when the day finally came, and they saw Jesus with their own eyes, they were filled with joy and couldn’t help but praise God. Their unwavering faith kept their hearts open to the joy that Jesus brings.
If we allow doubt to settle in, it will rob us of joy. Instead, we’re called to believe in God’s promises, even when life’s problems try to block our view. Jesus reminds us in Mark 9:23, “All things are possible for one who believes.” God’s promises are always greater than our problems, and His faithfulness is steady through every challenge. Joy doesn’t come from having perfect circumstances; it comes from knowing Jesus, the One who brings true joy.
If you’re struggling with doubt today, I want to challenge you to consider what it would look like to bring those doubts to Jesus. Ask Him for the faith to see past your uncertainties and to trust in His promises.
As you draw close to Him, you’ll find that joy is no longer a fleeting feeling but a steady assurance that He is with you, keeping His promises. And if you haven’t surrendered your life to Jesus yet, there’s no better time to do so. He came to bring you joy that goes beyond any circumstance, joy that comes from knowing Him.
