When It Doesn’t Look Like Victory

"I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." - John 16:33

We’ve all seen those movies where the hero fights bravely, only to fall short in the end. They’re powerful stories, but they can leave you with an ache, wondering why the ending couldn’t have been different. Sometimes, life feels like that too. You look around at the chaos in the world—wars, division, crime, broken relationships—and it doesn’t look like God is winning. Even when you know how the story ends, it can be hard to reconcile what you see with the victory you’re told is coming.

The truth is, the Bible doesn’t shy away from this tension. Jesus Himself said, “In this world you will have tribulation.” He didn’t sugarcoat it. There will be times when it feels like darkness is winning, when the weight of the world makes you question if victory is even possible. But that’s not where Jesus left it. He continued, “Take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Victory in God’s kingdom often looks different than what we expect. It doesn’t always mean immediate success, resolution, or comfort. Sometimes, it looks like perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds. It looks like faith when the world says there’s no reason to hope. It looks like trusting God’s promises even when the circumstances scream otherwise.

When you feel like you’re living in a losing storyline, remember: your story isn’t over yet. God’s victory isn’t just about the end result, it’s about His presence and power at work even in the hardest moments. The struggles you face today don’t negate His promises, they’re opportunities to trust Him more deeply.

Even when it doesn’t look like victory, God is still in control. His plan is still unfolding, and His promises are still true. Lean into Him, trust His timing, and hold on to the hope that, in the end, He really does win—and because of Him, so do you.
