Love is Not About You
"For people will be lovers of self..." - 2 Timothy 3:2
The world has made love all about self. It teaches that love is about getting what you want, feeling how you want to feel, and making sure your needs are met first. If a relationship does not serve you, leave it. If someone does not make you happy, cut them off. Love is about self-gratification, and if someone truly loves you, they will prove it by giving you what you want.
That mindset has shaped how people approach marriage, friendships, and even their faith. Love, according to the world, is not about sacrifice. It is about fulfillment. It is about being pleased, being served, and being the center of attention.
But that is not love. That is selfishness.
Paul warned about this in 2 Timothy 3:2 when he said that in the last days, people would be lovers of self. He knew that when the self becomes the priority, real love is impossible. Love that is centered on self is not love at all. It is manipulation. It is using people for personal gain and discarding them when they no longer serve a purpose.
God’s love looks nothing like that. The love He defines is selfless, not self-seeking. First Corinthians 13:5 says that love does not insist on its own way. Jesus did not love by demanding service. He loved by serving. He did not make others prove their devotion to Him before He gave them anything. He gave everything first. He laid down His life.
True love is not about what you get. It is about what you give. It is not measured by how much someone fulfills your needs, but by how willing you are to put someone else before yourself. The world will tell you to chase a love that revolves around you, but God calls you to something greater.
Ask yourself today, is your love self-centered or selfless? Because real love, the kind that comes from God, does not demand to be served. It chooses to serve.
