Putting Off the Old Self

"Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry." - Colossians 3:5

Let’s talk about getting rid of the old self. The Bible says we were all born with a base layer, but it’s not something we put on like an undershirt or underwear. It’s a sin nature, something we all start off with. God makes it clear there has to come a time when we put that old self to death.

Think about it this way. Imagine you put on fresh, new clothes every day but never take off your old, nasty base layer. Day after day, you just keep piling new clothes over the same old, dirty undershirt and underwear. Eventually, it’s going to stink. And even though you may try to cover it up with fresh clothes, the smell is still there.

The Bible tells us that our base layer of sin includes things like sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, greed, and idolatry. It’s not a list of minor mistakes. It’s the junk that defined us before we knew Jesus. And God’s Word says if you don’t put off that old self, eventually, it’s going to lead to His wrath.

But putting off the old self isn’t just about saying you’re done with your old ways. It’s about actually doing something about it. It’s about killing off the parts of you that are pulling you away from God. It’s about choosing to let go of the sinful desires and habits that once controlled you.

If you belong to Jesus, then the old self has to go. And when you strip off that old, sinful nature, you can finally put on the new life that Jesus offers. But it doesn’t happen by accident. It’s a daily choice to put away anger, greed, lust, and everything else that used to define you.

Are you still holding on to pieces of your old life? Are you trying to cover it up with something new without actually getting rid of what’s rotting underneath? Be honest with yourself. If you’re really following Jesus, you can’t keep wearing the same old base layer. It’s time to put off the old self for good.
