Putting On Your New Self

"Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator." - Colossians 3:9-10

When Jesus saves you, something incredible happens. You aren’t just given access to heaven for all eternity. You’re also given access to His strength, His character, and His love right here on earth. The Bible tells us that when we put off our old self, we also get to put on something brand new.

It’s like God handing you a fresh set of clothes to replace the filthy, worn-out rags you used to wear. You’re not just trying to be better or act kinder on your own. You’re stepping into the life Jesus offers, where you’re being renewed and made to look more like Him every day.

What does this new self look like? It looks like compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and above all, love. That’s the good stuff. That’s what your life is meant to be covered in when you walk with Jesus.

But here’s the problem. So many people try to put on these godly characteristics without taking off their old, sinful nature. It’s like trying to wear clean clothes over something filthy. The bad stuff will always find a way to show itself if you don’t strip it away first.

The Bible says you have to put off the old self before you can truly put on the new. You can’t keep living the same way and expect to see a change. That sinful nature has no business being part of your future in Christ. You’ve got to let go of anger, lust, greed, and everything else that once defined you.

Once you put on the new self, God provides what you need to live differently. You don’t have to try to be kind or forgiving in your own strength. Jesus gives you access to His strength. And through Him, you can do things you never thought you could.
