When You’re Asking Why

"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:18

You don’t need me to tell you there’s pain and suffering in this world. You’ve seen it. You’ve felt it. Maybe you’re feeling it right now. From the heartbreak of illness and broken relationships to the devastating images of war, injustice, and disaster on the news, suffering surrounds us every day. And it raises a question that has echoed through generations: Why?

Why would a good God allow so much pain? Why is there evil in a world He created? Why are you walking through a season that feels too heavy to bear? If you’re asking that today, you’re not alone. Job asked it. The Psalm writers asked it. People have asked it through every tragedy and personal heartbreak since the beginning of time.

Here’s the truth: we live in a broken world. Sin has fractured everything, and with that brokenness comes pain, loss, and suffering. But that’s not the whole story. God didn’t just wind up the world like a clock and step away. He sees every hurt, every injustice, every tear. And He steps into our suffering, not away from it.

God’s Word reminds us that He is near to the brokenhearted. He is close to those crushed in spirit. That means you don’t walk through pain alone. God is with you. He doesn’t always give us the answer to “why” in the moment, but He does give us Himself. His presence, His comfort, His strength, and ultimately, His promise of redemption.

The cross is God’s ultimate answer to suffering. Jesus entered into the worst evil and pain this world could offer, and He did it to defeat sin, death, and hopelessness once and for all. One day, He promises to wipe away every tear and make all things new.

So if you’re asking “why” today, know this: God is not distant. He is not ignoring your pain. He’s present. He’s working, even when you can’t see it. Trust Him to carry you through, and let His nearness be your comfort in the middle of your questions.
