Following the Taillights
"For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known." - 1 Corinthians 13:12
Not long ago, I found myself driving early one morning through a heavy, blinding fog. I could barely see the road lines, and construction barriers loomed somewhere on both sides. I slowed to a crawl, unsure of where to go, feeling a little stuck. But then I pulled up behind a massive truck at a red light, the kind with fog lights, light bars, and what seemed like a hundred other lights glowing in the dark.
In that moment, I realized something important. I didn’t need to light up the whole road myself. I didn’t need every answer or perfect clarity. All I needed was to lock onto those taillights and follow close behind. As long as I could see his lights, I knew I was heading the right way.
That’s how God works when we’re walking through the fog of life. Especially when we’re wrestling with the big “why” questions. Why does God allow suffering? Why do bad things happen? Why this pain, why now? While we may not get full answers this side of heaven, God gives us “taillights” to follow in His Word, truths that help us keep moving forward even when we can’t see the whole road.
One of those truths is this: God is good, even when life is not. Another is that He promises to be near to the brokenhearted, to walk with us, and to work all things together for the good of those who love Him. And maybe most importantly, we know that one day, the fog will lift. As 1 Corinthians reminds us, now we see dimly, but a day is coming when we will see face to face, and we will understand fully.
You may not have all the answers today. But you have enough to take the next step. Stay close to God’s Word. Follow the light of His truth. Keep your eyes on Him. One day, the fog will clear. But until then, trust that God has given you just enough light to keep moving forward.
