The Names That Tell the Story

"And he has a name written on his robe and on his thigh: King of Kings and Lord of Lords." – Revelation 19:16

When Jesus returns, it will not be as the humble carpenter from Nazareth. It will be as the mighty King, coming to bring justice and wage the final war against evil. Revelation 19 paints this picture powerfully. What’s striking in this passage is how the names of Jesus tell the story.
Three names are mentioned here, and each one teaches us something about who He is.

First, we see mystery. Verse 12 says, “He had a name written that no one knows except himself.” This reminds us that no matter how much we know about Jesus, there will always be more beyond our understanding. We can study His life, read His words, and walk closely with Him, but the truth is, He is God, and the finite will never fully comprehend the infinite. His mystery invites us to awe and worship, not to frustration.

Second, we see ministry. Verse 13 calls Him “the Word of God.” Words communicate, reveal, and express, and Jesus is God’s ultimate communication to us. He shows us the heart of the Father, He reveals God’s love and justice, and He tells us everything we need to know about salvation. Through Jesus, God’s message has come to life.

Finally, we see majesty. Verse 16 declares His name as “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” This title isn’t just a nice phrase, it’s a statement of His supreme authority and power. Written on His robe to declare His position and on His thigh to declare His power, this name announces that Jesus rules over every ruler and reigns over every kingdom.

These names aren’t just future realities. They shape how we live right now. His mystery invites us to humility. His ministry invites us to relationship. His majesty invites us to surrender.

So today, pause and reflect. Are you worshiping Him with awe? Are you receiving what He’s revealing to you through His Word? And are you living under His authority as your King? One day, every eye will see His glory. But today, you and I have the privilege of bowing before Him in faith.
