A Balanced Life

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Let’s go a little deeper into the idea of the three-legged stool life that we looked at yesterday. The three legs represent the three different aspects of us: Physically, mentally, and our soul. When all three are strong, you’re steady. When one is weak or missing, your life starts wobbling. Let’s take a deeper look at each.

First, the physical. This one is pretty straightforward. We know when our body isn’t working right. We feel it. We see it. But what’s easy to forget is what the Bible says about our body. It is a temple. Not a junk drawer. Not a storage unit. A temple. That means your body is sacred and set apart. God lives in you, so you’re called to steward it well. That doesn’t mean perfection. But it does mean discipline. How you sleep, how you move, what you eat, what you drink. All of it matters to God because your body belongs to Him.

Then there’s your mind. This leg is often overlooked or overrun. In Philippians 4, Paul gave us a path to mental health that flows right from the heart of God. Rejoice always. Refuse to worry. Pray about everything. Be thankful. Dwell on what is good. Surround yourself with godly examples. If you want peace in your mind, you’ve got to follow God’s design. Mental health is not just about avoiding anxiety or sadness. It’s about intentionally feeding your mind with the truth and guarding it from what pulls you away from God.

And then there’s the third leg, the spiritual one. The one most people forget. This is your soul’s connection to the Lord. And if you’re not careful, you’ll start thinking it’s optional. Like you can thrive physically and mentally while ignoring your spiritual life. But the truth is, when this leg is neglected, everything else starts to suffer. You may still be lifting weights and eating right, but your soul is starving. You might be managing stress okay, but you’re still missing the peace that only comes from walking closely with God.

When you cut off the spiritual leg, the whole stool falls. So today, check every leg. Strengthen the ones that are weak. And don’t forget, the God who designed your whole life wants you healthy in every way.
