Dressed for the Life You Were Made For
“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience... And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” - Colossians 3:12, 14
Have you ever put on a brand-new outfit and instantly felt different? Like something changed. Not just on the outside, but in how you carried yourself? That’s the kind of picture Paul gives us in Colossians. He’s talking about dressing differently, but not with fabric or fashion. He’s telling us to clothe our character.
And here’s the key. You can’t put on new things if you’re still clinging to the old. Paul talks about taking off your former way of life in Ephesians. The anger, the selfishness, the pride. All of that stuff has to go. Only then can you start walking in the new identity God has given you. Only then can you start putting on what really reflects Jesus.
So what are those things? Paul lays it out. Compassion. Kindness. Humility. Gentleness. Patience. And topping it off with love, because love is what ties it all together.
It's not just about behavior. It’s about becoming. It’s about letting God shape you from the inside out until you start looking more like Him in how you respond, how you speak, and how you live. But it won’t happen by accident. You don’t drift into godliness. You choose it.
Every day, you’re getting dressed. The question is, what are you putting on? Are you covering yourself in the attitudes and habits of your old self? Or are you intentionally putting on what reflects Christ?
The spiritually healthy life doesn’t come by trying harder. It comes by surrendering deeper. By letting go of what was… and embracing what God is calling you to become.
Before you walk out the door, ask yourself, “What do I need to take off? And what do I need to put on?” Then go live dressed in the character of Christ.
