Bright and Salty Disciples
“You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world.” - Matthew 5:13-14
The people who gathered on the hillside that day (in Matthew 5) to hear Jesus teach weren’t elite or influential. They weren’t leading cities or running businesses. They were fishermen, laborers, and ordinary families just trying to get through life under Roman rule. Many of them probably felt powerless and unimportant.
And yet Jesus looked them in the eye and told them something extraordinary.
He didn’t say they might be useful someday. He didn’t say they had the potential to make a difference. He said they already were. “You are the salt of the earth.” “You are the light of the world.” Not someday. Not if you try harder. Right now.
That declaration flips everything. Salt preserves and flavors. Light exposes and guides. Jesus was telling them (and He’s still telling us today) that if you belong to Him, your life carries influence. You don’t have to be a public speaker or a ministry leader to have an impact. If Christ lives in you, then you carry the flavor and brightness of His Kingdom into every space you step into.
There was a little girl at the fair with cotton candy bigger than her whole body. When someone asked how she could handle it, she simply said, “I’m much bigger on the inside than I am on the outside.” That is exactly the picture of what Jesus meant. If Christ is in you, you’re bigger on the inside than you appear on the outside.
The world may overlook you. But Jesus sees something different. He says your presence can preserve what’s good. Your life can bring light to dark places. Not because of your talent or popularity, but because of His power at work in you.
He wants you to live like it today. Let your words season the conversations you have. Let your choices shine light into rooms that feel dark. Because when Jesus calls you salt and light, He isn’t giving you a compliment. He’s giving you a calling.
